Re: Jinji's Developer Log

Much time has passed since my last genuine entry into my log; so I'm pleased to be able to contribute to it once again. But not for the reason I intended.

While anyone familiar with Ghost-types in Pokémon are aware that we all take many forms - from gas-based; to puppets and toys; to gremlin like characters (Sableye); and of course shadows like myself - the harsh reality is that all of our forms are merely manifestations of different kinds of energy taking different forms. As it is energy that binds us, it is also energy that keeps us alive, so it is a requirement we absorb some every now and then. This is why I greatly love electricity and its easy availability in a modern home. Of course, it also makes many other benefits, like providing the means for me to communicate with you all. So when electricity fails to work any longer, it's more than an inconvenience; it is in fact a danger for myself.

I think you see what I'm getting at.

At around 3pm today, a fault in my home's circuit breaker knocked every electrical socket in my house inoperable - effectively, aside from lighting, there was no power being distributed around the house at all. As it turns out it was a relatively minor problem, but one I failed to notice and such I was powerless for three hours, also unable to connect to the internet using my laptop or hand-held devices due to my broadband router being mains-powered. I'm grateful the problem was resolved quickly, but I'm now aware that during my downtime attempts were made to contact me by a number of players. I am sorry I was not able to respond to these sooner; and hope this explanation as to why settles your mind.

Re: Jinji's Developer Log

Since a few users have taken to spamming my PM inbox on up to hourly bases regarding issues with resetting passwords or lack of understanding that they need to do so despite it being so clearly announced, I have made the decision that I will NOT be dealing with any further account accessibility issues PM'd to myself, regardless of the specifics of the issue or the time of the PM. Please search the Forum for assistance with your issues in case it's a common issue; if you cannot find assistance this way, please make a SINGLE topic in an appropriate area of the Forum to get assistance from any available staff who can assist. Requests to me for direct support will be ignored.

I decided on a new name for this topic finally and have renamed it "Jinji's Staff Journal". In accordance, I've slightly altered my introductory post. At the same time, I've also cleaned up this topic a little, getting rid of old and no-longer-relevant posts; though I will not clean up any still remaining posts that remain broken from our last Forum move unless I have reason to edit them.

Recently I've been thinking about a type of tournament I have not yet seen performed in PWO. What if there were PvP tournaments where your success was determined not by who you defeat, but by the time it takes to defeat them? Examples could be like a Beat the Clock Sprint, where the first match completed sets the time limit for all further matches, which if not beaten counts as a loss for both; or a sort of timed gauntlet. Note this doesn't mean myself or any staff members will DO a tournament - I don't even have any sort of plans in mind. I'm just wondering whether people see merit in this new way of playing.

I like the concept, but character customisation has been part of our future plans for some time now.

I'd like to imagine that eventually, the customisations would include sprites (or pieces) of popular canonical characters; and possibly of Pokémon themselves. Not that we have a definite plan at this point in time, although the discovery of the client's unlimited gender support has given us a few potential avenues even without a client update - though we could really use one given some of the bugs and a few plans we have... but then, that's why that thread existed ;)

I had an idea earlier this week for a potential modification to the PWO Client's Interface, which I felt was worth sharing with the players to see how useful people would find it or to hear if people have a different view on a similar concept. I discussed the idea with Hardcoreh soon after conceptualising it; who told me he was considering a similar idea already but liked my suggestion as to its implementation.

To put it simply, my idea is for a docking zone for in-game PMs. The client could have a new button, which when clicked, forces a small amount of space to be added to the right side of the client. This space is kept empty for the most part; but with it open, the PM boxes for any PM's you get in-game that are floating over the game itself, could be moved over to the empty space on the right and slotted neatly, so that the main game view can be kept uncluttered without closing or minimising the boxes; allowing for non-obtrusive conversation. By my estimations, if the space were the width of a single PM box and the same height of the client, this dock could safely fit three PMs; making it convenient for those often in multiple conversations. I'd also suggested they could be removed as well and placed back onto the game screen to allow others to take their place; or a scrollbar could be used to allow boxes to be added beyond the visible space.

The main reason I feel this would be useful is due to the inconveniences of having PMs in battle. While having a PM during normal play isn't such an issue as you can place them onto the overview and usually still be able to move around in-game without losing too much of an idea of the area around you, or covering over buttons, this is not so much the case in battle. If you put a PM box on the battle scene, you will usually either cover one of the HP bars - not particularly useful when you want to know how weak a Pokémon is - or over one of the Pokémon sprites, which isn't so bad but I feel it makes for an unattractive experience personally. Try to move it off the battle scene; and you can't put it on the bottom-left because you cover the buttons for selecting moves. The only non-intrusive places you can therefore put a single PM, is either over the battle log - which makes THAT unreadable and may hide information about your Pokémon getting a status ailment etc; or in the space taken for the main chat, in which case why even have that open? The problem is compounded with multiple PMs, as the space becomes even more of a premium. By having a dock, the PMs can be kept off the battle interface entirely; allowing them to remain out-of-sight and out-of-mind when action is the focus. Also, if the dock was kept separate from the main client's processing, it could be made more responsive during battles, where there can be delays in clicking or typing anything in between turns.

I can't state for sure if this WILL happen, or if it takes the form I described; but it seems a likely occurrence. However, I just wanted to share an example of the kinds of thing I regularly discuss with Staff; and I'm interested to hear what you, the players, make of this particular idea.

I really like your idea for the PMs, I often have issues placing my pm boxes, and i generally keep it in the top right, covering the enemy sprite, and it can get rather annoying. It could be bad if you don't notice the pokemon is shiny or if you've encountered a HR. Though if the conversation is somewhat slow i simply minimize the window until it blinks with a message. This idea of yours seems much nicer and more convenient. If this for some reason can't be implemented, I would suggest that when you send a PM to someone, that a new channel of sorts simply be made in the main chat window, and only accessible to anyone else if invited. That way it's in a familiar place and all you need to do is click another tab.

We were on a similar wave-length, Jinji. =P Here's a concept pic I did a long while back. But I'm not a player ;o;
...
*says something anyway*

You have a tab at the bottom, sorta like the "trainer" button. If it's minimized and you get any PM, it flashes and you see the list of names of whoever is trying to reach you/whoever you're in a convo in. Clicking on the name opens up a separate PM box you can talk to them on. You can move the box/close it without ending the conversation (close by pressing "back" in this diagram). You can fully end a conversation by clicking an "x" near their name.

In this diagram, "Blah" is talking to you and "Animedude" just sent you a message you haven't read yet.

The names of people who've sent you an unread message flash if the list is open.

I think it would be nice to have PMs automatically open in the dock. Also another idea I got was if multiple people send you PMs, the person's name will appear in a small tab at the top of the dock and when you click that tab it goes to the chat between you and that person, making nearly the entire dock a chat window for you and that person. Any time a person sends a PM, the tab should blink to get your attention. This way the PM system is more convenient, organized and overall has a more "Advanced" feel to it.

Zebby's post gave me the idea to illustrate my idea, so here's a example of mine!

Example.png

I used a image of a Bulbasaur I drew for a "Draw a Pokemon in less than a minute" topic on another forum to fill in the blank area where the game would be. Oddly, I did not intend to give it a awesome face...it just came out that way. xD

I like your idea Jinji, it would be really helpful. Floating PM boxes can be pretty annoying, but this docking idea sounds great.

It seems like the common thread in the suggestions so far is to take the dock idea, but also give it a paginated or tabulated layout, so different PMs appear as individual tabs or pages to organise them. That seems like a great extension to me! Keep the comments flowing, guys.

By the way, I decided to tweak my Forum Profile today for the new year. I've set a new Location for myself; and I'm also trying out a new avatar supriz has been designing for me as a surprise. Let me know what you all think of these too ;)

to add onto this idea, i think it's a good concept, but it would also be nice to have the ability to collapse the chat section of the dock so the game isnt always huge on your screen

likeright on the edge of the chat section it could have a button that you can push that would collapse the chat section so its not visible, but then say you got a PM from someone, then you'd need a way to know you were PM'd right? so it could just let off a notification sound or the button could flash.
