What Would You Like To Suggest To Improve The Wiki?

Note: This thread is used to submit suggestions for the PWO wiki, not the game. Suggestions for the game would be more appropriately filed on playerdex's suggestion box.

I have noticed many remarks, from multiple readers on the wiki, that certain information that they seek doesn't exist, as well as many questions being asked which the wiki doesn't currently cover. Also, some who aspire to contribute to the wiki (such as me) are somewhat perplexed as to what would be more useful to contribute to the wiki atm. Because of that, I decided to make this thread to receive input, from a vareity of wiki users, on non-existing information [on the wiki] that they seek; your input can help provide to us a better idea on what information can be added to the wiki, to make it more resourceful for wiki readers and help wiki contributors think of/remember what tasks should be prioritized in terms of contributing to the wiki.

Before making a suggestion:

Whether it's creating a new page, improving an existing one, merging more than one page, modifying current templates/creating new templates, adding more pages to a particular category, etc... Any input will be appreciated, and taken into consideration in adding to the "Wiki Task List". Remember to elaborate on a specific description on what content you want to see added/edited, enough so that we get the gist on how to go about fulfilling it.

Vague/broad descriptions do not help. Just to provide a few examples:

Unhelpful: "The item page needs more information."

Helpful: "The item page needs to include more information, such as how to obtain this item, requirements to use it, its price."

Unhelpful: "You should add a new guide to the wiki."

Helpful: "You should add a training guide to the wiki, which can serve as informative to those wondering about the most ideal training spots for their pokemon's levels"

Unhelpful: "The main page needs to be improved."

Helpful: "The main page should contain a list of category links, such as pokemon, areas, quests, etc..."

Unhelpful: "The broken moves page needs to be updated."

Helpful: "The broken moves page needs to be updated, adding this move and explaining this reason on why it's broken."

Prior to making a suggestion, do a quick search on the wiki to ensure that the content does not already exist.

Food for thought for suggestions: Hypothetically speaking, if you were to rely on the wiki for your primary source of PWO-relevant information, what information has the wiki been lacking which forced you to resort to another source (or which you were not able to find at all)?

I'd also like to note to remember to keep these suggestions relevant to PWO, not the handheld games. Generally mutual aspects, between the Nintendo games and PWO, such as Kanto/Johto cities, Pokemon movesets (which mirror movesets used in generation 3/5; the latter generation if its moveset has been updated), etc are relevant; features that currently aren't implemented in PWO, such as breeding, the radio station, HMs/TMs, handheld game quests/pokemon listings, etc are currently irrelevant to PWO. Bulbapedia has already documented such information - the PWO Wiki is just for information pertaining to PWO.

Regarding template/table suggestions: It's more important that at least the basic information is available on the wiki first, rather than making flashy templates/tables and what not. It'd be nice to have such one day, but right now, it's a better use of the time to at least add all of the resourceful PWO information. When all of the needed information is added in the future, we might start to focus on adding new templates/tables and improving the existing ones, and organized the page's information into it correspondingly. However, this does not mean you can't make any suggestions to improve the template. If you believe a certain table/template is lacking a column/row, of which slot could be used for more information (eg: The area template could use an additional row to indicate the amount of NPCs in the area), then such a suggestion would be more realistic/important at this point in time than modifying the template's appearance, to render it on par with the quality of bulbapedia's templates/tables.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you want to contribute to the wiki: Anyone with a wiki account is permitted to apply the tasks on the task lists to the wiki. If you wish to contribute to the wiki, you can request a wiki account here.

bigboy was both a gm and questwriter, and autumnsoul was also a questwriter (on the second forums(green ones))

regi should also be in the quest writers group

tania was also the lead mapper before arenya

Technically, only administrators for the PWO Wiki have access to editing that page (namely Lee and Tenfold) <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />

Anyhow, I updated the task list to include it, for when a Wiki Admin is active to apply the changes.

Thanks~

How about an explanation between server and client? Most people don't know the difference, I'll admit I can't really remember. But it will help newcomers know which DEV deals with what.

Why don't you point out some of this out of date content then and also help make it up to date yourself?

Guide to the auction house, how to use it, how it works, general problems associated with it and so on.

Added the quest guide for the Kanto Train Quest (though it might require some rewording later <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" /> ), and I'll try to add the Johto Train Quest when I have the chance to do in-game research on it. Once the Mt. Mortar page is added, I'll try to upload a map for it. Thanks for the suggestions~

There might already be some sort of an explanation of the difference somewhere on the wiki, but I'm not certain. I'll do a search on the wiki, and if it's not already covered, I'll make a mention on one of the FAQ pages, or on the Pokemon World Online article.

Bulbapedia covers what category each move falls under. However, before using Bulbapedia for such, I'd like to note that in PWO, a move of any special type (fire/psychic/dark/etc) is treated as a special-type move, regardless of whether it is actually physical or not. For example, "fire punch" is classified as a physical move; in PWO, it's treated as a special move, because it's a fire type move, which itself is considered a special elemental type.

However, I may make a note to update the move set tables on the wiki, to add an extra column to indicate whether a move is special/physical (as well as what moves are status effecting moves).

Last I checked, there is no auction house page. I also noticed that there is no pokemart page on the wiki either, so I'll add it to the task list to create a new page, to cover them both. Thanks~

I made the appropriate changes. I didn't move Lee to Administrators because I'm still not sure if his movement there is permanent or not. I think it will be, but atm I don't think it is.

I also need to go back and edit the QR table so it doesn't look fuggly.

Lastly, would you rather me remove the date of which they staff member resigned? It was a project that I was going to work on, but it seems as though appropriate data is going to be near impossible to find.

Any other changes that require my attention, let me know. I'll be checking in when I can

Ah, I forgot that your user group on the wiki (Masters) has access to editing that page as well. Thank you~

Regarding the dates that former staff members resigned, it can remain there IMO. If we don't remember the specific date (in terms of the precise date), indicating the year/month (i.e: September, 2009) can still serve as informative to some extent. I'll try to jog my memory on which dates certain staff members specifically resigned (I've recently underwent a memory loss, meh). Also, do you think it'd be worth adding their known starting date, in addition to their last known date, as a staff member? (i.e: May, 2009 - September, 2009). If you need any help, I can tell you some of this information to the best of my memory.

Also, mad30 should be added to the CG list, and Zidonuke should be added to the former DEV list, just to add a couple of more suggestions to update it.

Thanks again~

With the newest surge of new players a lot of things come to mind. Granted, the wiki is a lot more extensive than it used to be and I absolutely love it.

First of all, I think a lot of people would appreciate a goto page for users who have problems. The general questions sections works as a pretty good catch-all, but I was thinking something along the lines of "What you can do and steps to take before yelling in caps for a GM 50 times." Like a guide for asking for information, where to look for it, who to ask, and how to do it politely. Mostly importantly the last part. I had a conversation turn sour with one bloke once when I told him that I didn't know the definite reason why he kept on getting stuck.

Also, maybe expand on reporting players. There's a question on the general faqs page, but other than referring to the community watch page on the forums, it doesn't tell much with general harassment, what exactly warrants reporting someone, or what to do when reporting.

And I might be crazy, but I searched and searched, but I couldn't find anywhere the exact rates for rarity or for being shiny.

@Nineliveseleft, there isn't really an exact rate for rarity as it differs depending on location and the pokemon itself.

I think something should be mentioned about in game trading/selling because people are always aking how much something is worth when the true value is always fluxuating.

Bluerise is correct. The precise rates very for different pokemon of a same rarity. From what I was told, Rare ranges from 1/10 to 1/50, VR ranges from 1/100 to 1/500, and HR ranges from 1/1000 to 1/5000. As the staff mentioned before, some HR pokemon are harder to find than others (for example, snorlax, which is believed to be one of the hardest HRs in the game to encounter). It hasn't been publicly disclosed the precise rarity of respective pokemon, in the said ranges, therefore all we could give is a general rarity range for each rarity.

As for your initial suggestion, there are already pages that cover how to look for certain information (such as the pokedex and what not) and some troubleshooting pages, but I'll see what else I can add, as there have been new problems in game that have yet to be covered on the wiki (such as the missing pokebar bug, which occurs at random times of the days). Also, I'll look if the rule set was added to the wiki page, and if it was, I may as well add a new section on it to cover the procedure on reporting rule breakers. Thanks~

I agree that there should be some kind of economy guide. However, as you mentioned, prices frequently fluxuate, and since it's a free market economy, it's almost impossible to give a fixed price. What people are willing to pay for different pokemon is subjective, and here are a multitude of factors that influence their perceived value on a pokemon, such as its base stats, rarity, token cost, move set, IVs, among other things.

Also, the supply and demand for different pokemon change over time, therefore prices change so much, that the page would require constant updating.

There was, however, a general trading guide on the old forums, which listed the value of certain pokemon, based on their rarity/Token cost/IVs/etc. It would be nice to have it again. However, regardless of any trading guide, it will be subjective to some extent, as long we're in a free market economy.
