I've started a few days ago. Now I have a team of level 17-18ish Pokemon and 9000 $, but I'm not sure what the best way to make money would be. I figured that training Pokemon and selling them surely can be a good way, but what's worth selling? And what others ways exist?

People pretty much love the powerful and/or rare stuff, should be easy enough to make money from there

Well, yeah, but what exactly counts as powerful? If I don't find shinies, what's my next best bet?

Very rares or Horribly rares, you can check via /list them on each route. Usually lv60+ go for 100k or more depending on the pokemon. Find very rare/horribly rare/shiny pokemon and sell them.
You could also start a daycare, which means you train pokemon for other people to a certain level. To start this up, you'll have to be trusted though.
You can make some good money with daycaring, besides, people can also offer you some good/rare pokemon C:
