If you talk to the NPCs on the island they tell you everything you need to know, that is the tutorial. Infact, the NPC right next to where you spawn explains it too.

you press space to talk to them. some of them will have tasks you need to do for them before you can leave.

Talk to the helper, then you get to decide where you want to go = which 3 starters you get to choose from, as in Pallet Town I went to, I got charmander, and the other choices are balbusaur and squirtle. In khanto or jhoto whichever other one, you choose from chikarita , sindiquil, or the water alligator thingy can't remember his name.
