How do I improve my fishing skills?

This is because your fishing skill is too low to catch whatever you found at that point.
You will need to work your fishing skill up in order to haul up rarer and better Pokemon, and the fishing skill works from level 1, the starting level, to 50, the last level requirement to find something.
If you want to check out what you can fish on your level, you can use the Wiki, or the Playerdex to find Pokemon that you can fish up successfully, without telling you it's too strong and got away from you.

You can also press the hotkey 2 (on your keyboard) in front of water to use your fishing rod.

not 'just', because if fishing attempt is unsuccessful fishing skill won't rise. So try to find place according to you skill. if you skill is low the best places are near starter towns: pallet, viridean etc.pablo550 said:
