Encounter Rates!

I know a topic like this was started on the OLD old forums (yeah, the GREEN and BLACK themed one, if I'm not mistaken <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" /> ), and I found it interesting and thought it could be useful if there are enough volunteers. The goal of this is to find out the encounter rates for specific pokemon in specific areas of the game, mostly the HR variety. Most people tend to say HR encounter rate is around 1/1000, but for some it may seem like a lot easier or harder to find than that.

How this works is pretty simple:

-The person searching will make a list of some sort with all the pokemon in the area.

-Then, each time they encounter a pokemon they place a tally.

-After awhile, you can start to get an idea of the encounter rate for pokemon in that area.

Now, this can be extremely tedious, and in no way is this experiment perfect; unless you stay in a specific area for a long LONG time, you will not get an exact ratio. But, I figure this is simple enough, and if you have time on your hands you could give it a shot. For those that are too lazy to make a tally every time and be very specific, maybe you could just report around the number of battles it took you to find the pokemon you were looking for, and maybe how many hours or so. At least to give an idea.

Let me know if anyone actually feels like doing it!

Thanks to!

is like shinys I think, if you search for a shiny common you have a big change to encount that shiny common in a place where you get it and other 2 commons than a placer where you can get it too but with other 4 commons ...

Like exemple I know is a place where you can get shiny geodude I mean the only common is geodude or there were 2 commons I don't remember you can search yourself.

the basic theory of probability.. even if a poke has 1/1000 rate, doesn't mean you'll find 1 every 1000 encounter, 2 every 2000, 3 every 3000 etc.. you might not find them at all in 100000 encounter, but you might find 2 in a row also. i guess u can make an experiment to determine the rate, but still, mathematically speaking, the result wont be accurate also,,

but i think the VR/HR rate is only some kind of encounter rate "range". i.e a HR is not fixed at o.1% rate, but maybe a poke is categorized as HR if they have 0.01% - 0.5%. coz if im not mistaken, a staff once said this in the chat.. that snorlax is relatively rarer than other HRs since u can only get 2 of them in the handheld. but idk, just my IMO

but feel free to make an experiment abt it, but like i said before, the result wont be accurate..

Actually the theory of averages means that everything will become closer and closer to being accurate with more and more data. probability may say that TECHNICALLLY a coin could land on tails every time out of a 1000 times but it is more likely that it will end up 500/500. now, as I stated, it won't be very accurately without reducing the variables and getting large numbers, but we can atleast get an idea. I'm not looking for exact figures, just seeing what's how rare certain things are in certain areas.

what im saying is,, why bother knowing the exact number? for me, 1/1000 (more or less) range rate of HR is enough to give the general idea that the poke is literally "Horribly Rare".. and i'd consider myself "lucky" when i find an elekid just 2 hrs in the power plant, and "unlucky" when i couldn't find any snorlax in 5 days (*facepalm).. since knowing the "exact" number wouldn't add the possibility in finding one..

again, this is IMO.. its a good thing if u want to do this research and we thank you for it.. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/PiplupHappy.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt="^_^" />

Well, Ive decided to finally update this, the numbers aren't dead on but its about as accurate as I could get it.

Route 7 Encounter Rates (about 8 hours of searching total):

Total Battles: 1573 +/- 30

Spearow: 436

Rattata: 390

Pidgey: 354

Meowth: 347

Growlithe: 24

Vulpix: 17

Murkrow: 5

Houndour: 0

Hey, it kept me busy <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/TorchicDance1.gif" class="bbc_emoticon" alt="" /> but so far it does seem some encounter rates are different than others within their own group: I.E. not all commons are 1/10. (note: not nearly a big enough sample yet to get an accurate answer)

I'll keep recording and see how the results come out!

This is relevant to my interest. I should be able to help with his after a few days. I have both patience and tolerance for this kind of thing.

If you want to find any HR or Shiny, you have to be <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/PiplupHappy.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt="^_^" /> Its what most people do after they've beaten the gyms and are waiting for the two week trainer reset to train their pokemon.

And any help is appreciated! Like I said, you don't have to be as thorough as I'm being, but as long as you post a general idea, that's fine too! <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/TreeckoWoot.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":woot:" />

....I had to re-read this several times. You played eight hours straight? How?! I can never stay online for more than a few minutes! The server always kicks me off for some reason and then I can't get back on for a few hours! :/ I really want to play this game more but it gets frustrating if I can only play a few minutes a day...

If you afk it will kick you and give you a ban time of a few minutes. If you're getting kicked for an unknown reason, make sure no one else is doing heavy downloading on your connection. Especially torrents.

No. If you beat an npc you can then go back there 2 weeks later and battle it again.

just a suggestion, but when you get results in, could you add them as spoilers at the top, on the main post?

also...it's nice to see you have the resolve to actually grind AND keep count.

Oh, I don't go AFK. I would be talking to an NPC or in the middle of a battle and everything would just freeze except the music. I could still open my backpack and stuff, but nothing works when I click on them. When I log out and try to log back in, it says the server is offline. Uhhh, heavy downloading....Might be my brother, but he's always doing things like that when I play MMORPGs....It hasn't negatively affected my connection at all..

Ohh, okay. Thanks so much for the fast and precise answer! ^.^

TehTaniel: No, that was not 8 hours straight <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" /> although I have played for that long quite a few times before. It was more like a period of 3 days of playing, with a total SEARCHING time of 8 hours or so. Not consecutive.

Subera: I'm gonna start doing it next update, I just didn't really know if I should keep updating this if not many people care <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" /> and well, I'm using a counting app on my phone to help with the numbers, but I get a little lazy sometimes <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/PikachuExcited.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":D" />
