Hey PWO,

Not Pokemon related but I'm just wondering if there are many musicians in our midst, any bands, and demos, youtube videos.. Just interested to know. I'm an Audio Engineer from New Zealand working at York Street Studios and Big Pop Music over the years and I'll be happy to answer any recording questions.

I used to play in a band called See Me Now we've got a couple of fun videos on youtube that I recorded. Here are some.

I like teh tunes :0

You're not in a band anymore?

Recording questions..

Yeah,

I recently bought a pretty nice microphone to record with, on my laptop.

Though somehow, when i record while singing with a song, the recording sounds alien-ish, weird.. I hope you know what i mean by that. It's like slow-motion,not my voice at all stuff <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />

How come?

This also happens when using other recording programs.

I'd love to get rid of it.

What microphone did you get and what programs are you using to record? What are the spec's on your laptop? Is the sound like your voice is being pitched down so it sounds lower or does it come out glitchy (lots of pops and clicks).

Yesssss. Musician here!

I love to rap and create my own lyrics. And no not Niki Minaj and Lil Wayne rap but realistic life type stuff. Think Eminem or Lupe Fiasco. I myself also do some Audio edits and technicianing (is that a word - Firefox says no, oh well.) In addition to this I also play a wide variety of instruments from harp and violin to drumsets so - You and I should somehow collaborate. I am also hear to help anyone with thing regarding instrumentation, lyricism, and just audio in general.

@rbecca: This probably means your computer is lagging - not anything to do with the microphone or programs. Especially if you are using a laptop I would venture to say that it is. I mean your overall computer may work fine but audio is extremely sensitive to any changes. I would try not running ANYTHING with it or even using a separate computer for recording if you are really serious.

The Original Poster may be able to add more input.

EQlipse, that's what I'm assuming might be the problem. Alternatively (but unlikely) it could be a clocking issue, depending on the microphone, perhaps it has it's own clocking setting that is different to the program being recorded. E.g. Microphone at 48kHz and the software at 44.1kHz, it can make your voice sound pretty alien-ish... But I'd say it's more of a latency issue. I'll wait for rbecca to tell me more.

Also I'd be keen to hear some of your stuff if it's out and about. If you need any help mixing or mastering anything, let me know.

This is my old band, I'm the drummer. Not my favorite style of music, hence why I left. But it's still a good song imo

I was the drummer in my band too, I dig it man. I'm a bit of a fan of pop punk. Are you in a new band now?

No problem C:

I got a microphone from the brand Hansen, it's nothing very special, though it is definitely good enough to record stuff with.

So far as for programs i've used; Audiocity(or something like it), Free Hi-Q recorder, Kristal, SoundCloud and the windows recording program.

Spec's on my laptop, no clue, where do i find them? xD

The sound isn't glitchy like pops and clicks, more like it's going in slowmotion, and my voice is very low or something, it's really awful to hear xD

Would you want an example of it? I could put something fail on youtube ;x

Thanks for helping!

I see, i had no clue that it means that my computer is lagging, because youtube still works all the time when i record.

Neither did i know that audio is so sensitive to a laptop :0. Next time i record, i'll close any program/website/w.e that i don't use at that moment, see how that goes. Separate computer isn't an option for now, since when i start my old laptop, there's smoke coming from it :c

I'm having trouble mic'ing my guitars. I want to capture the bogner uberschall tone, but I have to blast it in order to get the crispness of the notes. Unfortunately, even though the Mic is mounted, I still get a rattled distortion during playback.

I thought about using a Cone and condenser inside an enclosed box, would you recommend this? If not, what would you recommend for mic'ing a fullstack amp. And yes, I'm playing Melodic Death Metal similar to the black dahlia murder.

Audacity <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/PikachuExcited.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":D" />

..still interesting. It might actually be a clocking issue. Check your computers sound card settings and make sure that it's running at 44.1kHz (44100Hz) and maybe under the settings of the recording program you're using check that they are also 44.1kHz. These are the 'sample rates' basically how many times the computer is converting analogue sound into binary data which at 44.1kHz is 44100 times a second. You can take it up to 48kHz to have a faster sample rate, but the music industry default is 44.1kHz as CD's only playback at 44.1kHz. If sample rates are different then all hell breaks loose.. This is the only time I've heard the slow motion voice problem.

I just wanted to say I really like the songs you posted.

Mostly the first one since the original of the second is grossly overplayed on the radio <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" /> lol.

Guitars, in my opinion are the hardest things to record. From what I've found getting a modern guitar sound in any genre requires a combination of mic's, placement and EQ. (sometimes serious EQ) Although some purists would argue that if you need to EQ then your placement is off. I'd say this would be true for less processed forms of music but for any rock these days, this is my idea of getting it.

I'm not familiar with the 'cone' mic you're talking about but a mic combination is definitely the way to go, I have had most success with using a ribbon (Royer 121) and a condenser (Neumann 87) but I've seen plenty of people use cardiods like SM57s and Sennheiser 421s and get a good sound. Another huge thing to consider when it comes to guitars is SO MUCH of it is about the amp, guitar and musician. Does the amp run on tubes or solid-state transistors, is the guitar a Gibson or an Ashton.. the musician can have all the best gear in the world but if he's only been playing for 3 weeks he/she will still sound like poop, so tightness of your performance when recording is super important.

Let's rap this up. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />

In terms of placement, I usually for for the middle of the speaker diaphragm if it's too harsh maybe move the mic's to where the cone of the speaker touches the diaphragm so slightly off centre. Oh yeah, when using mic's make sure to have the best phase coherency so keep the microphone diaphragms lined up so the sound source hits the mics at the same time. Some people put mic's right up against the grill but if you've got a room the amp sounds nice in, use it, back those microphones off from the cab maybe up to 20-30cm. That distorted rattle you're talking about could be a number of things.. A speaker cone in the cab? Perhaps the microphone can't handle the loud sound pressure level. I'm sure you have already but have a good listen to where it's coming from cause it could be as simple as a cab handle rattling (personal experience. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />) Whatever it is, pad it down so it stops rattling.

Try things out man, and trust your ears. One of the biggest mistakes of people researching audio online is they take too much of what people say as fact. Just jump in the deep end and get it sounding how you like. But I'll say this, don't be afraid of being too drastic with the EQ, it might be what those guitars need!

Wait a second. I remember you! You gave me your ep shortly before pwo went down. Haha, I still have it on my ipod. I listen to it now and then. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ChikoritaSmile.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":)" /> Good to see you're still at it.

Ohh awesome!! Thanks man. The band is no longer at it unfortunately. We broke up. But audio engineering is my full time job so I also am glad I'm still at it. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />

Maybe one day I'll start writing again, I just don't have any motivation for it at the moment. <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/TeddySad.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":(" />

Oh a Musician topic! Well I suppose I am best as a soloist and more so a dancer. In real life I actually want to be a singer so I'm doing my best lol. I recently won a big school karaoke competetion so I guess that says how good I am (considering that mainly because all the other contestants were mainly guys and all the other girls were sorta bad-ish).

I have recorded my own list of songs. Mainly they all sound so choppy and lagging because I use a built in Mic to record and have used Audacity to bump my voice a little by few percentage numbers because my voice always gets changed when it's recorded. I have found this even when I've been in videos taken by my friends. Strange enough but I deal with it but I'm told I sound better in person than over a recording.

I guess my question is why does my voice always change when I record someting. I don't think it has anything to do with bad quality mic's or anything but it just seems that my voice in general likes to tick off whatever is recording it. Should I try speaking up louder? Say things in a higher/lower tone? That I don't know what could be done.

Anyways here is a sample of a cover I recorded. It's a cover of I Just Wanna Run by The Downtown Fiction

The voice we perceive as our own in our head is different to how others perceive it. It's like when you hear any kind of recording of your voice in music or on a video, many people take a step back and are like "Do I really sound like that?"

In these circumstances I think recording your voice more is what's important, learn to use your voice in ways you like, it's hard at first but you get used to it.

I've always thought that these days vocals in songs are smashed with so much processing (Compression, EQ, Autotune, Time Adjustment, Reverbs and Delays) that people believe that when they sing they should sound like that. It's like hearing a kid sing a long to a Chris Brown song trying to make their voice sound like they have the Autotune on.. and then that kid recording himself and wondering why it doesn't sound legit. It takes a little more to get a professional sound. BUT. Your voice can sound different for many other reasons.. Different microphones have different sounds, but probably more appropriately said different qualities can make your voice sound different.. If you record yourself through a computer/laptop microphone and through a professional studio microphone the pro audio mic is going to sound better. THE MOST important thing when it comes to vocals is the performance. When you're recording you have to smash it, give it everything, you want it to be a performance that you and everyone will be amazed by. This is why a lot of (not all) vocal performances in songs require tonnes of takes, a singer might sing a chorus over 50 times and even then have the part pieced together in bits because some WORDS might sound better than others, that's how intense it is. It's totally ripped apart and put back together. Professionally recording a vocal comes down to pretty much that, getting the best you can out of it. Don't try and do the whole thing in one take, break it down, focus on sections and nail them to the wall.

Look into getting a POD-UX2 man. No need to muck around with mic set-ups as it's a direct line in. You can choose any style amps you want, even blend 2 together. Can have a Mesa Boogie blended into a Marshal. Hell you can even choose virtual mic set-ups for it. The POD-UX1 is good too, but for only $30 cheaper you lose a few extra line in's.

Interested in what your opinion on these are as well cpt_planet.

Also cpt_planet, any specific genres you work with? Or an all round kinda person?
