Is that part of the new exp system? Why is the level cap 97?

I'm not sure why the level cap is 97 but negative exp is there to compensate for the change from a smaller to a larger exp base when evolving. You just need to train it off.

Yes, the negative exp is part of the new exp system, it's because the evolved form of a pokemon has a higher base exp than its earlier form, and the neagtive is the catchup to what the evolved pokemon should have needed to be at that level. Any pokemon from before the exp system was changed were also effected, and as they now need more exp to level, have negative exp too.

The level cap was also reduced at this time, and has been slowly raised over time to prevent any speed hackers or the like from having full PCs of max level pokemon weeks before other people had levelled their pokemon.

97 is a prime number in base 10, so I truly can not think of any logical reason as to why they would choose 97.

97 is the atomic number of Berkelium. << That could be it. Mhm. ~nods~

level cap used to be 93 or 95 ( cant remember ) before and it was increased to 97 so i am sure someday it will be back at 100 and i think the actualy plan is to make max level 105. it takes more than a million exp for each level after 96tho.<img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/SquirtleEmbarrassed.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt="o_o" />

Tangela's for some weird reason. Any high level tangela will give you the most xp if we talk strictly of common pokes <img src="http://www.pokemon-world-online.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BulbasaurSilly.png" class="bbc_emoticon" alt=":p" />

What gives the most xp?

it depends on what level pokemon you are using. a 30 lvl pokemon in mt silver against a lvl 40 wild tangela with membership gaves 30000 + exp .
