PWO doesn't make money (as no staff member is paid for working on the game/websites) and relies on players donations to pay server fees

What's wrong with having non intrusive ads on the forums or website?

Making money over someone else's copyrighted contents?
I mean, the Pokémon concept and stuff related are kind of obviously Nintendo's properties, and Nintendo is known to easily sue people for using what's theirs

To show the problem on another perspective, it would be like taking a book, putting your name on it and selling it to people, that's not really nice for the original author who did all the work

edit: PWO already received a letter from Nintendo lawyers about closing the game years ago

I think they once said they'd have to replace all the ingame graphics with there own before they could profit off of this project

PWO is a game ran by Pokémon fans to show our respect to Nintendo and Pokémon, while at the same time offering to fellow Pokémon fans something Nintendo has so far steadfastly refused to do - namely, a PC-based, multiplayer, online Pokémon experience. We are not attempting to profit over Nintendo's trademarks; nor do we aim to compete against the official output. (This is part of the reason PWO does not have a mobile client; and the main reason we will never develop one.)

The PWO Team takes donations solely to cover server and other running costs, with a small contingency fund for unforeseen expenses; excess funds are then donated to charity. Nobody on the Staff takes a wage or earns money from the project. We run this game simply for fun and, to some extent, for personal growth, both enhancing and maintaining our skill sets. To us, the satisfaction comes from knowing we are running not just a popular and long-lasting fan MMO, but through it we have fostered a community of friendly and fun players :)
